Jul 26, 2009 Wind Conditions: Medium
Race Committee - Cut Loose. Maybe your average conditions with a regular crew but for the Single-Handed Race competitors it was a handfull. Four boats showed up in the windy conditions. None flew their spinnakers downwind from Canoe, around the I-course, twice around. Cut Loose was very busy organizing the Race Committee and didn't have enough time to get his boat ready and do a headsail change before the start, so he was late. Joy had been waiting at Hog Back for anyone else to show so he was late. Spirit was calling out on the radio from his mooring and got a response from Vaporize on his way to the committee boat stationed on the west side of the lake. The sequence was delayed several times waiting for more boats to show. Where was everybody? They got the flags and horns in sink and got us off to a good start. The breeze held strong and the weather was perfect. Spirit and Vaporize were on time for their start at the committee boat and moving fast on starboard just as the Lac du St. Sacrement was cruising close by. Luckily they were moving fast enough to clear so Spirit didn't have to tack but still close enough for Rodger to hear all of the tourists on board cheering him on. Joy made up the time lost at the start and finished in second place on CT, and Spirit held on to the huge lead from the start and finished first overall. Next year we need to get our regular single-handers out there once again to compete in this traditional Corinthian annual event.
