Race 16

Aug 21, 2024      Wind Conditions: Heavy

The 16th race of the Wednesday Night Series brought out 15 boats for the evening of sailing in 15 MPH winds that came out of the WNW.  The clouds looked threatening but the rain held off.  The RC with Graham’s help set a W4 course using a tetrahedron set near Boon Bay at a 330 deg heading about .98 miles from the start/finish line north of Hogback mark using the new cylindrical mark as the pin end/turning point. All the boats got off to a clean start and beat to the first mark, some going left, others right and some staying to the middle.  At the top mark it looked like Stinger, Uncle Ludwig, Iko Iko and Cut Loose lead the fleet. At the second mark Stinger dropped their chute early and Uncle Ludwig held a bit longer to close the gap between them with Iko Iko and Cut Loose not too far behind. At the third mark Stinger managed to increase her lead with Iko Iko passing Uncle Ludwig.  At the finish it was Stinger for first on both line honors and corrected time followed by Iko Iko for second and Uncle Ludwig for third. On the first leg of the race La Forza del Destino lost their forestay and had to withdraw from the race, keeping their mast up by NOT lowering their jib till they could attach the spinnaker halyard for support. The crew called in on Ch 72 telling the RC of their withdrawal. Thanks for that. Next week is the last Wednesday of the series for 2024. The after-race awards party will be held at the ADK Brewery and Pub on the second floor.

Race 15

Aug 14, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 15th race of the Wednesday Night Series was held under threatening skies as storms were popping up in the late afternoon from the west.  The timing of the storms worked out well for the 13 boats that came out to sail. The RC with the help of Andrea from "T" set a W4 course using North Canoe as the first mark. Because of the passing weather the winds shifted from southerly to northwest, so the RC decided to just "go with it" and have an off the wind start. Wild Thing managed to be OCS even though the started right next to the committee boat. They were called over early and managed to go back and restart properly. The rest of the fleet made decisions as to whether or not to fly their chutes. Knot on Call, Woot and a couple others opted for the chutes. Knot on Call and crew did a great job of flying the chute to the first mark and managed to stay within close range of Woot, who had to drive down in some of the puffs as they had a few "rounds ups" causing them valuable time and a slightly longer track to the first mark. Most of the fleet seemed to not be too spread out at North Canoe with a drag race, on tack beat to the pin end bouy. The J/22s did very good taking three of the top six positions. Congratulations to Knot on Call for both line honors and first overall on corrected time followed by Cut Loose in 2nd and Fuzzy Logic for third. The after-race party was held at the Grotto at the LG Club with a great attendance. The Paid Entry list is published, so if your name does not show paid, please do so if you have raced more than a couple of races this season. We do have expenses to run the races as flags and the new pin end mark had to be replaced this year. There are only two more races left for the season with some of the finishing places very tight.

Race 14

Aug 07, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 14 of the Wednesday Night Series was a very nice day with less humidity and temperatures in the 70s. The race was postponed for five minutes to allow five boats to make it out from the LGC in the light winds to get to the start area. The RC set the tetrohedron to the NNE at 030 deg and the start/finish line was east of Yankee, using the new cylindrical pin end mark. I hope that this mark is easier to see for those racing. A course of W4 was called for with the help of Andrea and Graham. The RC announced that the race sequence would commence at 6:30 with a start at 6:35 pm whether or not the straglers were at the start line or not, to many cheers. The beat to the first mark with the light and shifty winds had everyone jockeying for position, with Cut Loose getting there first and Stinger second. The rest of the fleet had many different maneuvers to try in the shifty conditions. On the last leg of the race Stinger was closing the distance with Cut Loose. Cut Loose jibed away with Stinger banging the extreme left side of the course holding off their jib to the last second. This strategy worked as Stinger crossed the finish line at the boat end and Cut Loose mid-line. Congratulations to Stinger and crew for line honors and first on corrected time, followed by Cut Loose and Joia in third. The after race party was held at ADK Brew Pub. The standings are tight for second place for the season with only three week left to go.

Race 13

Jul 31, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 13 of the WNR series had threats of rain and some thunder bumpers in the forcast.  The RC started the race about 4 minutes ahead of the scheduled time of 6:30 pm because of the pending weather.  Another W4 using North Canoe government mark as the windward mark was posted as the race.  The first leg saw the lead change a few times as the light and shifty winds caused by the storms to the south and a big one to the north.  At the first mark Stinger and Uncle Ludwig were fighting it out with the rest of the fleet not too far behind.  Stinger had a better spinnaker set than the hour glass on Uncle Ludwig and managed to pull ahead.  On the fourth leg of the race the heavy rain showers to the north spread down to the race area and another shower came over the fleet from the west with everyone getting soaked.  Some thunder overhead was heard as the last of the fleet finished.  The RC left their mark and boat anchor tied to a small marker and headed to the LG Club out of the weather.  After calculating the elasped times, congratulations to Stinger for line honors and 1st overall, followed by Uncle Ludwig in 2nd and IKOIKO for 3rd.  Next weeks after race party will be at the ADK Brew Pub (John Carr's place).  The season is winding down with 2nd place for the season being hotly contested.

Race 12

Jul 24, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 12 of the Wednesday Night Series had 13 boats outs sailing.  The RC with the help of Graham and Andrea set a W4 course at 180 deg with a .8 mile leg using North Canoe government mark as the windward mark.  With storms rolling in from the W-SW the sailors were treated to a rather quick race.  The after race party was held at the LG Club Gratto with another great attendance.  The party broke up before the heavy winds and rain hit the area.  Some boats were headed back to their docking sites.  There must be some stories there.  Locally the residents lost power for 8 or more hours with downed trees and lines.  As for the racing the fleet of 14 managed to stay close together for the race giving the RC several close finishes.  Congratulations to Stinger and crew with 1st in line honors and corrected time followed by Cut Loose in 2nd and IKOIKO for 3rd and the crew of "t" slid in for 4th.

Race 11

Jul 17, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 11th race of the Wednesday Night Series brought out 13 boats for the afternoon race. The RC set a W4 course with the North Canoe government mark as the windward mark. The first mark was at a distance of 1.0 mile at a heading of 180 deg. The racers were treated to southerly winds blowing at 8-10 with some light rain showers to help cool things off for awhile. At the start two boats were OCS, Tipsy and Iko Iko. Both boats were hailed and they both went back and started properly. Stinger led the fleet to the first mark and stretched our her lead for the rest of the race. Congratulations to Stinger and crew for line honors and first overall on corrected time, followed by Wind Machine and Iko Iko. The after-race party was held at the Diamond Point Grill with a very good turnout. Next week the racers are invited to the LGC for the mid-summer after race party.

Race 10

Jul 11, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

The 10th race of the season had a little twist this year as the race is usually done on a wednesday, but due to tornado warnings the Race Committee decided to pospone the race till the next day on thursday.  This change brought of 12 boats for a nice afternoon of racing in about 7 knots of wind.  The RC set a W6 course at 195 deg, .9 miles away using North Canoe government mark as the windward mark.  The race was shortened to a W4.  Congratulations to Stinger and crew for 1st place on ET and CT with Wind Machine and IKOIKO for 2nd and 3rd.

Race 9

Jul 03, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 9th race of the 2024 season was a great afternoon for sailing.  With the winds from the south at 12 to 15 mph the RC set a W2 course with the start/finish line near the LGC and the windward mark being the Diamond Island government mark about 3 miles upwind.   Thanks goes to Graham Blackburn for helping out on the RC boat and it was great to be home after my 4 weeks off on vacation to San Antonio, Tx with family.  We saw 105 deg there while the rest of Ya'll had warm temps in the 90's. HaHa    At the start most of the boats, 13 in all took the pin end and using local knowledge, keep going east for the big shift that was to come off of Speaker Heck Island.  From the start line it appeared that Wild Thing led the fleet to the first mark.  Ben McAndrews helming Joia sailed a great race on a J/22 with their small jib beating the J/24's to the first mark and managed to stay ahead on the downwind sleigh ride to the finish.  At the finish line Wild Thing got line honors.  Joia took 1st place on CT with Stinger in 2nd, and Wind Machine for 3rd.  Knot on Call came in 4th for CT giving the J/22's a good showing.  Can you believe we are already past the mid point of the 2024 season!

Race 8

Jun 26, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

Cut Loose set a W6 course in a  SSW 5 kt breeze to North Canoe with a 214 degree heading. Uncle Ludwig nailed the start ahead of the rest of the fleet and continued to grow the separation with each leg taking line honors and 1st place. Big shifts through out the race to the west provided big opportunities for some sailers. The course was shortened to a W4.  Thank you Cut Loose and friends for committee boat duties!

Race 6

Jun 12, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

Thanks Iko Iko for doing race committee. Race number six was a beautiful day with light winds. RC set the windward mark/orange ball roughly a 1/2 mile down the lake at 175 degrees between Long Island and Canoe Island. The starting line was out in front of the club and the wind was very light at race time. Unfortunately, Knot on Call got caught on the windward side of the starting line and struggled to get back before the gun. Stinger and Windfall were down at the pin, while all the other boats were at the committee boat.

Everyone headed left, and eventually at the top mark it was Stinger (leading) and Windfall in 2nd place. On the downwind leg, the wind stayed light as Stinger and Windfall rounded the mark in the same order. At the windward mark Stinger still lead. The RC shortened the course to finish downwind changing the course to W-4. On the downwind leg, Windfall passed Stinger to get line honors. On corrected time, Stinger was the winner. Special thanks to the official sponsor of Lake George Wednesday night racing Yankee Marine for lending us the committee boat for last night's race. Thank you very much Andrew Brodie.

Race 5

Jun 05, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

Alfie and Crew filled in for Dave as Committee boat — thanks! (Stinger gets a 6th place for being RC.) Nice steady breeze from the south. Race Committee set up W-4 course to Canoe Island North. Congrats to Uncle Ludwig for a win, with Iko Iko very close behind for second, and woot! for line honors and hanging in there in the top three on corrected time.

Race 4

May 29, 2024      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race 4 for Wednesday Night Racing brought of 10 boats for this clear evening with winds above 12 knots with some nice rolling waves. The RC with Nelson as the flag person set a rather unconventional race course. The wind was coming from 030 deg which meant that the usual 1st windward mark would be someplace in the direction of Dome Island. The RC decided to do the opposite and decided that the 1st mark of a W2 course would be south using the Diamond Island government mark, giving the boats a Downwind Start. All went well at the start with Stinger popping their chute at the boat end of the start/finish line and leading the fleet south. On the way to the Diamond Island mark some boats took the slot between Big Canoe and Long Island while others like Woot went west of the Canoes. This made for some exciting sailing with the  velocity of the wind more to the east than to the west. After rounding the 1st mark the sailors were greeted with good winds for the beat back to the finish line. Congratulations to Stinger with 1st on both elaspsed and corrected time, followed by Wind Machine in 2nd and Cut Loose in 3rd. For the next four weeks the regular RC is unavailable so Stinger will fullfill that duty next week, followed by Iko Iko, Uncle Ludwig and Cut Loose on June 26th. Good luck racing in June to everyone.

Please Note:  a correction was made to Brass Ring elasped time...should have been 1:13:12.  I went to my voice recorder a corrected the error.

I am having problems with attaching video for everyones enjoyment.  Working on it

Race 3

May 22, 2024      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 3rd race for the Wednesday Night Series Race season was a great night to be out on the lake.  The winds were about 8 knots out of the south.  The RC set a mark between Speaker Heck and Canoe Islands as the windward mark and set the start line about .6 miles north of there.  Withe the help of Nelson Snowden on RC the 10 boats that came out to sail checked in.  Since everyone checked in early, Thank You, the W 6 race was started about 10 minutes early to take advantage of the winds and daylight.  At the start signal, Stinger hit the line perfectly at the pin end.  Stinger and Woot decided to take a tack to the west for somemore wind pressure.  This did not work out so well as others that went for the Long Island lift made out with T and Cut Loose rounding the first mark ahead of the fleet.  On the rest of the legs of the 6 leg course the boats stretched out trying to stay in the wind pressure.  In the end, Woot crossed the line first but IKO IKO who was 7 seconds behind took 1st place on corrected time with Uncle Ludwig in 2nd and Cut Loose in 3rd.

See you out on the water next wednesday for Race 4 of the season.

Race2

May 15, 2024      Wind Conditions: Light

The 2nd Race of the Wednesday Night Series was unlike last week's race where the conditions were quite windy, this week not so much.  The RC went out on a very gloomy afternoon with light rain, no wind, low clouds and no beer.  A course of W4 was set with a tetrohedron set north of the tip of Long Island.  A slight puff of air came in from the west....the forcast was ESE so the went on a heading of 270 deg about .6 miles and set the orange hip itty hop in that direction.  Back at the eastern mark a start line was set for the check-in with 8 boats coming out for the evening.  A slight line of wind came in from about 220 deg giving the compeitors a slow beat to the first mark.  Stinger had the best start and the first to tack over to port to fetch the 1st mark.  On this leg Woot managed to ghost by the fleet and rounded the mark in 1st and decided to set their chute that did not help.  The wind filled in a bit more on the 2nd leg but the RC decided to shorten the leg and finish the boats at the 2nd mark.  Congratulations to Stinger on 1st overall with Cut Loose in 2nd and Uncle Ludwig in 3rd.  Thanks goes to Rob Fraiser for helping out with relocating the start/finish line using on of the LGC mark boats.  See you next week.

Race 1

May 08, 2024      Wind Conditions: Heavy

The first race of Wednesday Night Racing for the 2024 Season brought out 8 boats initially but some decided not to race as a potential storm was brewing to the west.  The RC with the help of Graham Blackburn set a I-5 course with the government make at North Canoe as the windward mark about .8 miles from the start line.  As boats were checking in the winds went from SSW to WNW along with some gusty winds from the cell on the other side of the mountain.  Several boats dropped out before the race started.  Thank You Stinger and crew for calling on channel 72 to tell the RC that they were not going to race.  The others, NOT so much.  When the race started Woot took off on a reach without flying their chute followed closely by IKO IKO.  Woot lead the rest of the fleet around the course getting line honors.  After doing the numbers, IKO IKO captured 1st on corrected time with Uncle Ludwig for 2nd and Woot for 3rd, and Cut Loose 4th.  The after race debrief was held at the Holiday Inn in the village with about 15 in attendance.  See you on the water next wednesday.  Please remember to check in ASAP to help out the RC.

Note:  Results of Race 1 has 2 boats added that were not in the data base (new boats) and scored DNF
