Fun Three

Sep 23, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Spirit again started the fleet with just using the automated horn system, no flags, and I think we are getting better starts than ever before! This week for the seven starters we had a starting line from the LGC to a pin in the middle of the lake! Long enough, ya think? Windward was all the way around both Canoes and the south danger bouy and back. I think I will need to use the tretrahedron next week. It was so hard to find the pin coming back downwind. All boats found it and made the turn into the south harbor marker at the club. A perfect course for another late season perfect night. There was the threat of storms that never made it to the lake. Not even the rain. Perfect I tell ya, so were going to do it again next week but 30 minutes earlier. START at 5:30.

Fun TOO

Sep 16, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Who Knows? All that I heard was this incredibly loud horn! Loud enough for all 11 boats that showed for our extended series to get a good start. I've heard from most of you so I have posted the results. Did you all like the course? I'll give all of you that went to the downwind RC bouy instead of the pin bouy a 3 minute GOOF award. HELLO. As it ended up, with Deb at the helm, Spirit won. Yea!

Fun One

Sep 09, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Unsupervised RC Start - I believe I saw a couple of over-earlies, with Uncle Ludwig being the only one that restarted. What do we do with the boat that didn't? This is the list of boats that reported in with their times. We had 14 boats that started and all finished in about an hour. Let me know if your name isn't on the list and what your time was or if you don't know, where you think you placed (who was near you?). It was a great night for being out on the water, great course, steady north winds, with some exciting racing and mark roundings. Let's do it again next week.

Race 17

Sep 02, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - John Haller did an extremely efficient and acurate job with the last race of the season series. The race for second place depended on Crackerjack not just beating Windog but putting enough boats inbetween them. They were counting on first place until the wind at the leeward mark went west on them and Spirit was able to drop their spinnaker early and slide inside at the mark and take it all the way home from there. About a half hour of calculations after the race and Rodger was on his way to Carl R's for the awards and party. There was a huge crowd anxiously awaiting the announcements and the celebration. It continues to be so much fun running our Wednesday Nights that many wish me to continue on for a few more weeks, so we will.

Race 16

Aug 26, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Double Trouble. It was a challenge getting off the starting line and not because of light and shifty winds. You had to be on your toes to stay in sync with the timing sequence of flags and horns and yes, even a count-down timer that didn't work so they started the chrono at 4 and kept time from that point forward. Nevertheless, all 19 of us paid close attention to the signals and many kept their own times! Wise for the RC to set the windward mark off shore a bit but still the shifty west winds played its tricks on the fleet. The I-2 course tested each of our patience as the lead changed several times with those boats behind taking advantage and moved to challange for the lead. OMG I can't tell you how many of you I have contacted about these finishes. I met with the RC and learned I had to deduct 4 minutes from everyone's ET. I have had to redo the results according to input from all of you, so here it is. It's the best I can do with the information I have received. We have one race left so make it your best. See you at the awards after the race.

Race 15

Aug 19, 2009      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Jako. Being true to Wednesday Nights tradition Steve and his crew were determined to get a race off, even in the lightest of winds we've had all summer. We've seen it all this year and evidently 21 other boats felt the same, as this season is coming way to fast to a close. The good thing is we earned another throwout, the bad is that some of us had to use it tonight. But not Vaporize! Dougall earn it tonight with a convincing win by more than 20 minutes. Congratulations.

Race 14

Aug 12, 2009      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Crew of Jupiter. With little to no wind predicted for the evening most crews were still on the docks at 6 having cocktails thinking of how to improve their standings with only a few races left in the season. They would have to win each race and the rest of us would have to bomb, they figured (after another G&T). Like that was going to happen! Well never say never, and yes the wind did come in long enough for our 2 hour race. The doubting Thomas's (Windog) who questioned the wind gods kept their focus and slid along with the new west wind to win the race followed by Crackerjack. Stinger and Spirit who led most of the race covered each other and had to pull out the stops to gain a few boats up the last leg for a reasonable finish, but at least not a bomb.

Race 13

Aug 05, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Ron Byrne. The biggest fleet of the season with the greatest variety of boats from the small LGC Flying Juniors to the fast J/24s, to the 30' Pearson, we had them all out last night. And it was a picture perfect night with along-the-shore entertainment for Bob McDonough and the KJ boys on the East Terrace of the Lake George Club during dinner. Charlanne on the foredeck of Spirit impressed her husband's dinner guests by her flawless jibes and quick takedowns leading Ben and Rodger across the finish line first, making them the winners overall, ahead of the 25 boat fleet. In an interview with Rodger afterwards he said, "Didn't have the best start, got rolled at the weather mark, but just took a couple of chances by splitting from the fleet. The further we separated the greater our gain (loss) was going to be. It turned out to be a fun night!"

Race 12

Jul 29, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - John Tarrant. Those of you hoping we wouldn't race tonight . . . no such luck. Even the last boat finished 9th. Better than some regular nights. You should know by now if there is wind we will race. The rain never stopped but the lightning did, so you can't really call it a wash out, can you? Nine of us went out to race in the rain. Boy we sure did show those Cheeseburger kids, didn't we! What good role models we are! Everything and everybody is still wet. And what a race! The short course made for crowded mark roundings and a great effort by everyone avoiding crashing into each other at that leeward mark. Upwind to the first mark the Viper showed its quick speed out of the blocks and rounded first. The head and shoulders fake downwind at the pin gave Flying Circus the lead in the twice around course. Ken, I thought for sure you were going to round that mark. I was going to tell you. Sure I was, but your confident crew said they knew all the time where they were going. Great boat work by your crew. Windog took a quick tack out of trouble just after the start and how it always works, were forced to go in the right direction (you can thank me for pinching him off), capitalized on that, and went on to win the race on CT.

Race 11

Jul 22, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Frank Nigro and the Windog team. A wet start to what turned out to be a nice evening for racing. The north breeze took everyone up the middle of the lake around Cotton Point danger bouy and spindles and back down. Wild Thing and Spirit led a few boats on a tight reach back to the middle of the lake, but why did they keeping going so high? Looking back Uncle Ludwig sailed straight down, slowly but surely. Stinger took the hard jibe back over and caught the group while Spirit and Crackjack took a tour to the east shore. That didn't pay off and left them in the back of the pack. Nice race Kyle.

Race 10

Jul 15, 2009      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - John Dickinson. We seem to be consistent at 20+ boats but every week there is always someone new to add to the fun. And what better way to meet our new Fleet 24 member than out on the race course. Right after the start in a shift a couple of boats tacked. One made it across, the other didn't. New racer, Ellen Cantrell on "Jam" lived up to the boat's name and the Jacobs on "BreakAway" welcomed her aboard with a smile. She waited until back on shore to meet the rest of us in the traditional way. The W2 course gave Windog and Kingfisher and Joy of the J/22's the downwind finish advantage and Crackerjack hugged the west shore with them to pass Spirit and Stinger to win the J/24 race.

Race 9

Jul 08, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Kyle Lavoy. With a little help from the fleet the line was lengthened and squared for a perfect start for the 22 competitors. A short I-2 course was set to get the racers finished early so we could make way to the LGC Grotto for the Mid-Series Party. It seems a couple of boats were more anxious than others crashing into each other shortly after the start. Mark roundings were also pretty crowded as the pictures that Ed Ostberg took from the RC will show. They will be posted soon. A tight race downwind to the leeward mark between Spirit and a couple of J/22s was exciting, but the short upwind leg to the finish allowed the J/24 genoa in the dying breeze to put enough time and distance between them for the win on CT. A one second separation in ET gave Vaporize the horn at the finish line. Nice race. Nice party. More about that later.

Race 8

Jul 01, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Jag. With storms all around us but confident setting a twice-around Canoe Islands race, Stephen sent the fleet of 12 boats off in a shifty start. You would think staying out of the lee of Canoe would be favored yet almost the whole fleet hugged her shore and took the shortest route to the southern mark. I think some thought the mark was north Canoe, yet that mistake led to their advantage. Never again Kyle, am I giving up my crew. Coincidence, I think not! Congratulations on a great race! Hey, there was a tight race at the back of the fleet too. Thank goodness for throwouts.

Race 7

Jun 24, 2009      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Bill Dutcher and granddaughter Sunni got the 21-boat fleet off to a great start to Cotton Point. Not much they could do about the dramatic wind shifts that kept the crews hopping to the chaos! As one crew said to her skipper (me), when he called for back-to-back jibes, "Are you messing with me?" It was a challenge where the lead changed almost as many times as the wind direction. The Viper finished across the line first followed by Looby's tri-hull. Spirit was 3 minutes ahead of the fleet of 10 J/24s, and on CT won the longest race of the season. Last boat to finish in 2 hours! While being towed back to the docks it gave us the chance to look up at the full rainbow off in the distance and we could hear the Crackerjack crew singing Happy Birthday to the triplets.

Race 6

Jun 17, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Diana & Rodger Voss and Ben McAndrew. A classic W2½ was set with an actual weather mark, away from the shadow of Canoe, and a course down the middle of the lake that finished the last boat in just under an hour. We had plenty of wind to take the fleet of 22 boats on a tour of the southern basin but tonight's course was set to test the boat-handling skills of the crew on this perfect Wednesday night. The fleet needs to be commended on adhering to the rules of mark roundings, port/starboard, and finishing with the same number of crew that they started with. Smart move of Crackerjack to go back and pick up Susan whom they left at the last leeward mark. Congratulations to Windog for their first FIRST of the series.

Race 5

Jun 10, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

6-8 knots out of the South/Southeast, the crew of Wild Thing on Tom's Cobalt set a start just northeast of Yankee, to the North Canoe Island Buoy then the North Club buoy, twice around. 20 boats, and most of them wanted the pin at the start; after some pushing and shoving there about half the fleet ended up heading left, the other half right, and Stinger emerged with a big lead heading to the windward mark. Vaporize cut it a little close, but luffed up to shoot the mark nicely; Bandit wasn't as fortunate and couldn't carry their momentum enough to avoid the mark (they did their 360 later in the downwind leg). The breeze began to die at the end of the downwind, and the course was shortened to an upwind finish at North Canoe, and of course the wind then filled to provide everyone with a quick upwind leg to the finish, with Spirit and Kingfisher coming on strong to gain ground on Stinger and keep it close.

Race 4

Jun 03, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee -Dougall and Snowden of Vaporize. First course of the season to Diamond Island was set for the 15 boats, with an even longer downwind leg, rounding to a short finish leg back upwind to the start. The south breeze took us between the islands pretty much on one tack and back down on one jibe. Except for Wild Thing who after starting 2 minutes late, banged the right corner and skirted Canoe Island to catch up to the group! He along with Revolution kicked into high gear and motored past us all downwind and finished first and second across the line. Although both are J/80s, Revolution has a better handicap, which gave him a better CT, but not so fast. Both Spirit who led most of the race, and Windog coming on strong at the end, beat both of them on CT finishing first and second.

Race 3

May 27, 2009      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Flying Circus. You've got to love it when you're prepared for a wet race and then it doesn't rain. Okay it was damp and cold, but we raced, and it didn't rain. With three additional boats joining the 12-boat fleet last night we have had 21 that have participated so far. It was a congested start that split some of us to the right from the rest of the fleet who continued left into a dying breeze. When we consolidated back we were all pretty even. Break Away (with some familiar faces on board) made it around Hog Back first followed closely by Bandit. It was Uncle Ludwig with some great boat handling and speed that led the J/24s to the finish (that'll be the last time I let you have Deb), but not fast enough to keep Catchin Js from finishing ahead on CT. However, just like the Kentucky Derby, Revolution got her bow out from underneath the pack after the mark rounding and John put the asymmetrical to work and took off on a tight reach rolling the J/24s and J/22s. Once again Haller finished first across the line by three minutes but this time finished first overall.

Race 2

May 20, 2009      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - A boat load of Brodies (actually it took two.) Almost a carbon copy of last week's wind direction and strength. The course was an "I" course, twice around, finish in the middle. The RC work was impeccable. Good call on the over-earlies. Very agressive J/22s so early in the season. The call at the line sent three of them back. Revolution had a great start and crossed the finish line first on ET, and Spirit and Jupiter stayed close enough to win first and second on CT. A couple of J/24s were short on crew so be sure to show up at the docks on Wednesday Nights if you are interested in crewing!

Race Committee - Alfie Merchant. Sure, no problem, he's done it before. Plus he had help, right,(Moe and Curly). Well, besides the pin end at the boat end and visa versa, you would have never known there were any problems. The sequence was perfect and the fleet of 14 boats got off the line perfectly into a stiff southerly breeze. What another great turn-out for our first race of the season. A lot of shuffling in the fleet at the marks with some late race strategies working for Spirit and Windog on the shortened course. Why?, but I'm not arguing.
