The wind rolled around to the north just prior to the start, dropping during the downwind spinnaker run to the leeward mark at North Canoe, and died as the lead boats started the second upwind leg. Boats slowly drifted up to the northern mark, and eventually the breeze began to fill in from the south, carrying everyone to the shortened-course finish at the windward mark.

A short course on one of the longest days of the summer... boats reached the first mark in just 8.5 minutes. At the second mark, Stinger rounded first, followed by Uncle Ludwig, Spirit, Brass Ring and Fuzzy Logic. At the third mark, Ed Gardner on Iko Iko christened his new boat, hitting the mark and then doing a 360 to exonerate. And the fourth mark it was Stinger, Uncle Ludwig and Spirit. A beautiful evening for sailboat racing. Congrats to woot! for line honors, and to Stinger for the win on corrected time. The race also produced several teachable moments, let’s review:


Barging at the start:
Knot on Call held the boat-end layline at the start, and with about 15 seconds to go, both Wild Thing and Fuzzy Logic made an attempt to barge in between Knot on Call and the committee boat. Fuzzy Logic spun around to bail out in time, but Wild Thing poked her bow in, fouling Knot on Call in the process. Wild Thing immediately tacked away to the other side of the committee boat to do a 720, two turns including two tacks and two jibes, per RRS 44.2, exonerating herself for the foul.

Hitting a mark:
Spirit hit the windward mark, breaking RRS 31. And per RRS 44.1, the remedy for that rule breach is a one-turn penalty. However, Spirit waited to perform that penalty turn until just prior to crossing the finish line, which is not allowed. RRS 44.2 requires the penalty to be taken “as soon after the incident as possible.” Waiting until the end of the race to take penalty turns is legal in match racing, which has a different set of rules — you may have seen this move in older America’s Cup races — but it is not legal in the fleet racing that we all do.

Contact at the Finish:
Judy and Uncle Ludwig were both heading upwind for the finish on port tack, with Judy ahead and just able to make the line at the boat end. Because this incident occurred right at the committee boat, we had witnesses. Judy crossed the finish line first. Uncle Ludwig was to leeward and slightly overlapped with Judy, but that overlap was established after the boats had entered the zone. (Therefore, Uncle Ludwig was a right-of-way boat but not entitled to mark room per RRS 18.) At the finish Ludwig luffed up sharply to avoid the committee boat and in doing so hit Judy’s stern. RRS 16.1 says “when a right-of-way boat changes course, she shall give the other boat room to keep clear.” RRS 14 requires boats to avoid contact. And RRS 43.1 exonerates a boat for breaking rule 14 “if the contact does not cause damage or injury.” However, Judy reports that there is physical damage to her boat. The definition of “finish” indicates that a boat has not finished if she takes a penalty under RRS 44.2. And that rule states: “When a boat takes the penalty at or near the finishing line, her hull shall be completely on the course side of the line before she finishes.” With only Wild Thing in the rear-view mirror (who was not an issue on corrected time), Uncle Ludwig could have taken her penalty and then finished without losing anything in the finish order.

This situation at the finish is similar to the barging incident at the start: Ludwig could have bailed out at the last minute, seeing there was no room (as Fuzzy did at the start) jibed around and then crossed the line.

RC: Uncle Ludwig. Wind: 5 knots at 200°. Course: W-4

Eight boats came out for the fourth Wednesday Night Race and were treated to a chilly, grey and wet evening on Lake George. The rain and South wind amplified after the start from a spitting 3ish knots to a slightly pelting 12-15. New skipper Andy Meader on Wild Thing jumped out to an early lead at the first mark with nearly the entire fleet in second place behind him. Spirit and Stinger duked it out up and downwind for most of the W4 course while woot! kept steady pace and braved a slight knockdown in the bigger breeze with the chute up to snag line honors.  Woot!’s knockdown gave pause to the crew of Wild Thing, who led around the last mark but opted not to fly the big asymmetrical on the final downwind leg. Knot on Call’s tortoise-like stamina won them on corrected time, Congrats Joe and crew.

May 26, 2021      Wind Conditions: Light

RC: Dave Dougall. Course: W-4. Wind 0–5 out of the south at 195°

At the start Judy and III tacked midline on to port while the other boats stayed on starboard. Stinger was the first of the boats heading left to tack back on port. At the first mark it was woot!, Judy, Wild Thing, Stinger, Knot on Call and Uncle Ludwig. Downwind woot! and Wild Thing sailed the long favored starboard jibe, with a short hitch on port over to the mark, while the symmetrical boats were able to sail deeper all the way down to the leeward mark. At the second mark it was woot! (24:35), Wild Thing (25:44), III (28:35). Back up to windward with the wind dropping, woot! (38:36) and Wild Thing (41:22) rounded first. On the final downwind leg, wind disappeared from the center of the course. Wild Thing worked east to find breeze off Long Island, while Stinger and Uncle Ludwig headed west for the shore breeze there, which proved to be the better move. Corrected time matched order of finish for the top three boats. Congrats to woot! for line honors and the win! Stinger was second and Uncle Ludwig third. After race at Sushi Yoshi.

May 19, 2021      Wind Conditions: Light

RC: Dave Dougall. Light north breeze, RC set an I-3 course with a dropped mark at a compass heading of 020° and North Canoe as the leeward mark. A left shift at the start, boats immediately tacked on to port. Judy had the best start. Stinger tacked early on the upwind leg and headed to the west shore. Judy rounded the windward mark first, with Wild Thing immediately behind, and Stinger next. On the downwind leg the wind died and rotated around to the southwest. At the leeward mark the first group to round was Stinger, Uncle Ludwig and Wild Thing. Several boats dropped spinnakers and switched back to jibs to get around North Canoe, then more sail changes in the light shifty breeze for the short leg to the finish. After race gathering at Sushi Yoshi (as we wait for the Adirondack Brew Pub to open on Wed nights in June).

Race 1

May 12, 2021      Wind Conditions: Light

RC: Stinger.   Stinger made first race start exciting with unconventional flags, horns, and start sequence.  But the real excitement was the big wind before the race, as a small cell came from the north.  As is usual for Wednesday nights, the wind let up as the start approached, and 10 minutes into the race, almost completely died as the wind swung around to the South.  After 20 minutes, it filled in enough to get all the boats across the shortened course and back home.
