Race 16

Aug 25, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - John Haller. Ugg - what a night. The RC watched the wind move from East to North, then fill in from the West, then move to North before setting course North/South. Of course the wind then shifted to the East. They were hoping it would oscillate back to North for the start... After our first botched countdown, was thinking that moving the line towards the wind would help, but after doing that, RC thinks it probably was the wrong thing to do. Oh well. At least the race got off, and boats were able to finish.

Race 15

Aug 18, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Ron Byrne volunteered to take over duties for the 18 boats that came out in the light breeze in hopes of getting a race off. Some didn't think it was going to happen and retired early. I counted 14 that finished. For those that waited had a wonderful end to an evening of sailing. Dutcher had the best start but I would give the best finish to Moriah. The west breeze died a bit and allowed all of the boats to tighten up at the Hog Back rounding. Nate got Moriah moving and didn't slow down giving him his best finish. Patience and concentration were key to staying in the race. Two races left in the regular season!

Race 14

Aug 11, 2010      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race Committee - The Taylor family came together to give us a great course and great wind. A very aggressive start with fiberglass flying and boats doing penalty circles... well at least one or two exhonerated themselves. That is the concept of Wednesday Night's self-governing SIs let's not forget. Shame on those that ignore or bully and yell and don't do what's right. Looks like we're back at an anything-goes mentality. Not good for the quality of sailing we're trying to provide. We're not out there to bang boats and have close calls that could result in serious damage or injury. Kind of spoils the night doesn't it! Congratulations to the winner

Race 13

Aug 04, 2010      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Spencer and a boat load of Wild Things had fun swimming in the warm waters after they sent the fleet twice-around in a light but steady breeze. Many of us found ourselves in a pile-up at the favored pin end with Spirit and Jupiter getting caught over-early. Big mistake! When the RC repeated the names after about 100 yards, sure enough the tan hull was spotted. Back we went while the others banged the left side. The course was skewed to the right so we went right. When we tacked we got lifted all the way across the course, but took a lot of transoms. We then went to the port layline and came in on a lift to the mark and pleasantly found ourselves rounding in 4th right behind the leaders! Yea. Charjer was flying around the course with a big smile on Ron Byrne's face lovin'his new J/24.

Race 12

Jul 28, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Amir and crew of Jupiter. A sprinkle here a sprinkle there, and then a nice breeze to take the 18 boats around the three-times-around course. A lot of good boat handling by all crews made the difference. Great start by Uncle Ludwig and "s" to lead the fleet the first time around. If you escaped the clusters at the marks and gybed quickly, you made out the first time. The Viper showed his speed even in the lightest of conditions and left the fleet standing the next two times down and won his first race of the season. Congratulations Dave!

Race 11

Jul 22, 2010      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race Committee - Cut Loose (John and Crystal Dickinson and Joe), did a great job of figuring out a course for us in the changing wind direction before the start. For all 14 of the boats that showed up to race last night we were rewarded for the first 30 minutes with terrific sailing. It was a tight start at the committee boat end with Stinger slamming the door closed on Jako, literally with contact, and Ron Byrne out in his first race with Charjer, being called over-early. Tom Selfridge handled the tricky shifts upwind and rounded Canoe Islands in first, in "s", (Who's In First?), (In First), (#1396), so many more names you'd have to ask Tom, but not unlucky for him to change the name again. The boat is fast! They held onto the lead around Hogs Back, the leeward mark, with Stinger, Vaporize, Spirit, Joy, Flying Circus, and Uncle Ludwig, following around in that order. If only the RC had shortened the course and finished us there we would have had a race. At that time we had thunder but no lightning, and dark skies and rain over Tongue Mt, so their next option was to finish at Canoe. In the next 10 minutes the weather changed dramatically and the RC wisely abandoned the race as boats were dropping out and heading to safety. Lightning could be seen all around and the amazing sustained winds of 40+ were knocking boats down. The boats still out on the water were able to get their sails down and motors on, and Joy anchored to the lee of Speaker Heck and had a front row seat watching Vaporize sail down the lake leaving her crew in the water. After the blast came the rain, and then a reasonable breeze from the north to get everyone back home. All boats checked in and reported everyone safe.

Race 10

Jul 14, 2010      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race Committee - Bill Dutcher. Some terrific Wednesday Night photos along with his narrative: "In between anchor dragging, horn blowing, course changing and scoring, we managed to take some shots with my lil' cell phone. Man do I wish I could have been sailing in what appeared to be the best Wednesday Night sailing conditions I can remember." Almost instant karma - Wizard must have known she was being put out to pasture for a frisky new Charjer. Right at the start signal the shroud plate ripped out of the bulkhead and her mast fell into the water! Ron called in to let us know the crew was okay and they were able to get the rig out of the water and the boat back to shore. "Oh yes, the RC also enjoyed the help of a dead chicken to oversee our work at the finish." "Sure was a beautiful night. On the RC boat we were even serenaded for ½ hr by a large, nearby loon, as the moon set over the mountains." Or was that Spirit's new yellow spinnaker at the finish. Great shots. We'll get them up on the website.

Race 9

Jul 07, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - The Jackson's and Romanesko's doing a superb job in getting the fleet off to a great start. As light as the air was we truely had an upwind and downwind leg. With 3.5 minutes before the start we made our turn toward the RC. Was I way too early? A minute later I was just passing the stern of the boat so I figured I had better just keep it going down the line. Catchin'Js was on my tail and at 10 seconds I looked back to see Joy and Stinger battling it out at the committee boat favored end. Spirit and Catchin'Js got the momentum going and led to the first mark. The others that started at the pin would have to tack to make the mark. Spirit opened up the distance back down before stalling 50 feet from the leeward mark. Everyone closed in as we rounded and headed for what we hoped would be the finish. With a full minute between us and Joy we were pretty sure we won on Correct Time.

Race 8

Jun 30, 2010      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Race Committee - John Tarrant and son. Strong gusty winds out of the west gave the biggest fleet of the summer so far the longest un-shortened course. Three times around! Mixed in with the knock-down gusts there were holes that would gobble up the leaders and allow everyone to bunch up in the middle down wind. Revolution had spectacular smack-downs and Crackerjack had an amazing lift right up the middle of the final beat to the finish to beat out Spirit. Luck, I say, but not enough for any of us to catch the winner, again, Al and Al on Stinger.

Race 7

Jun 23, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Rodger Voss and the crew of Spirit. There's never such a thing as too much fun on the committee boat, especially when you have one of Yankee's finist pontoon boats. Doing RC in style assisted in getting a race off in an iffy West breeze but the competitors did an amazing job moving slowly but surely around the W2 course. Windog had to spin a bit to keep out of Stinger's way at the start and just one over-early down at the pin end. It was neck-and-neck all the way around the course for Vaporize and Stinger in a one-second finish between the two. Another close one between Cut Loose and Lily James and a photo finish between Uncle Ludwig and Revolution. While all eyes were on Stinger, John Tarrant's "Catch'n Js crossed the finish 3rd but won by a second on Corrected Time. Congratulations on your first 1st place of the season.

Race 6

Jun 16, 2010      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Uncle Ludwig and crew. A fine job indeed! They used the horn sound system that got all 16 boats off the start in fine shape. Lots of tacking in initial shifts after the start. The surprise that had a few of us overstand was the short weather leg to a buoy north of Canoe. To our advantage was the knock to the mark so we didn't have to foot off. Once around it was peddle down up the lake around Cotton Point reef. Very tight roundings by Vaporize and Revolution who were way ahead by then, and Stinger with Crackerjack and Spirit pushing hard right behind. Some decided to stay in near the west shore back upwind and a few of us went out to find the stronger breeze. The course was shortened after the rounding to a downwind finish. Revolution maintained their perfect performance and finished first!

Race 5

Jun 09, 2010      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race Committee - Ken Herd. Did it really rain that much? Evidently the weather kept away many of our regulars. New to the fleet this week were Jupiter and "s". Glad to see Amir and Tom back out on the water. We only had 13 boats out to compete in somewhat damp conditions. I don't recall having water pouring off the mainsail so my answer would be, not really that much. But it was windy and the RC sent us around Canoe Islands twice and back again. Singer got off to a flying start at the pin and rounded the islands first. After that Vaporize popped his asymetrical and took off to lead us all around the course and finish across the line in first place.

Race 4

Jun 02, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Alfie Merchant. Now that was a slipping "I" course. Not your conventional way of shortening the course mind you. The shortened leg was about as long as the starting line. 3 words: "set the anchor". Great start by the 17 boats competing in the light air. Aggressive among the J/24s after quite a week of e-mails flying around about Rules and protocol. It was their 4th race in Fleet 24's One-design Series and tonight offers them a throw-out. Those results will be published separately. And what was that flash that passed us all down wind? Looby was still working his way upwind while the rest of us were heading downwind trying to catch any breeze out there. Spirit found it with his new yellow spinnaker with Revolution hot on his heels.

Race 3

May 26, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Crew of Windog, plus a few guests. Great job. Hard to handicap this one when it starts out with wind kicking up white caps at the beginning, then to a total drifter. After the big blow it came down to chance. One boat and then another each had their special wind to move them past the boat right next to them and then it stopped. Eighteen boats charged the start; separated, choosing their favorite side of the course; coverging at Cotton Point; and then the drift to the shortened finish. Adam did an excellent job describing exactly where that was and was able to get everyone finished under 2 hours.

Race 2

May 19, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Committee Boat - Brodie. Windy and drizzly all day up until race time and then, go figure, the rain stops along with the wind. Another light air race for the 15 boats. A shortened course allowed everyone to finish just under an hour.

Race 1

May 12, 2010      Wind Conditions: Light

Race Committee - Dougall. Vaporize needs a couple more coats of bottom paint before she's ready so he switched with Voss. That gave Spirit a chance to race. McAndrews took the helm of Spirit as his last hurrah of racing on Lake George. He's moving to Newport to teach sailing and compete with the big boys. Good Luck Ben. He had a very good finish against the 11 boat fleet. Congratulations. However, there was no stopping Haller who led wire to wire, but the J/24's stayed close enough with Uncle Ludwig earning the top spot on corrected time.
